Audition songs: common questions

How do I choose a musical theatre audition song?

Pick a song that suits your voice type and sits comfortably in your range, then match its style to the show you are auditioning for: a Golden Age ballad for a classic musical, a pop or rock song for a contemporary score. Choose a character you could believably play.

What is a 16 bar or 32 bar cut?

Many auditions ask for a short excerpt instead of the whole song: roughly 16 or 32 bars of music. Mark the cut clearly in your sheet music for the accompanist, and choose a section that builds to a strong moment.

Should I avoid overdone audition songs?

Not always, but a song that many people sing invites comparison. If you choose a well-known song, make sure you can sing it exceptionally well and make it your own. Each voice page flags songs coaches often call overdone.
