Bea

Who is Bea?

Bea is fiercely devoted to Nick and their family, and she chafes against the restrictions placed on women in Elizabethan society, at one point disguising herself as a man to earn extra income for the household. She is practical and clear-eyed where Nick is impulsive, often serving as the voice of reason amid his increasingly desperate schemes.

Her determination to work and provide, despite the era's expectations, gives the show an early feminist throughline that runs alongside its central rivalry with Shakespeare.

Bea's role in Something Rotten!

Bea is a supporting role featured in the number Right Hand Man, in which she argues for a true creative partnership with Nick, requiring a strong, assertive belt and confident comic presence. The part stands out for giving a female character real agency within the show's broader farce.

Heidi Blickenstaff originated the role on Broadway, bringing grounded warmth and comic sharpness to a character who often serves as Nick's moral anchor.
