Berger on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with the 1979 film
The 1979 film gives Berger the fate the stage reserves for Claude. In Milos Forman's film, Treat Williams's Berger sneaks onto an army base to visit Claude, is herded onto a plane in his place, and is shipped to Vietnam, where he is killed. On stage, Claude goes to war, and Berger survives.
Gerome Ragni, who co-wrote the show, created Berger on Broadway in 1968. The film also moves one of Claude's stage songs, I Got Life, to Berger, while keeping his Donna. Ragni and co-writer James Rado were unhappy with the film, saying it failed to capture the essence of their work.
Who is Berger?
Berger is the freewheeling, rebellious center of the tribe of young hippies at the heart of Hair, a character defined by his rejection of authority, convention, and anyone telling him what to do. He is fiercely loyal to his friend Claude and to the tribe's ideals of freedom and love, even as his own impulsiveness sometimes creates chaos around him.
Berger's energy drives much of the show's early, playful scenes, and his relationship with Claude, as Claude wavers over the draft, gives the character real emotional stakes beneath his brash exterior.
Berger's role in Hair
Berger is a lead role that anchors much of the show's rock energy, requiring a performer with a loose, magnetic stage presence and strong rock vocals. He features prominently in the show's opening numbers and drives much of its comic and rebellious tone.
Gerome Ragni, who co-wrote the show's book and lyrics, originated the role of Berger in early productions. The part remains a favorite for performers drawn to its uninhibited, high energy demands and its embodiment of the show's countercultural spirit.
