Calliope

Who is Calliope?

Named for the Greek muse of epic poetry, Calliope is part of a jealous sisterhood of Muses who resent their sister Kira for descending to earth to help a struggling artist find inspiration. Rather than playing it straight, the musical leans into camp, and Calliope is written as part of a comic double act with her fellow schemer, plotting to sabotage Kira's mission out of pure envy.

Her presence in the show is rooted in classical mythology filtered through disco era humor, since Xanadu's songs come from the Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John songbook that Jeff Lynne and John Farrar helped shape for the film and stage adaptation.

Playing Calliope on stage

As a supporting player, Calliope is not the emotional center of Xanadu, but she is a comic engine. The role calls for a performer who can commit fully to broad, theatrical villainy while staying light on her feet, since much of the show unfolds on roller skates and leans on quick, campy line delivery.
