Broadway compared with the 1965 film and 2013 live TV version
Christopher Plummer played the Captain in the 1965 film, but his singing was dubbed by Bill Lee. Plummer is credited with helping turn a character lacking substance into a stronger, more complex figure with a wry sense of humor and a darker edge. Theodore Bikel created the role on Broadway in 1959 and earned a Tony nomination, and Stephen Moyer played him on NBC's 2013 live broadcast.
On stage, the Captain also sings No Way to Stop It with Elsa and Max, a song dropped from the film, and An Ordinary Couple with Maria. The film gives him and Maria the new duet Something Good. Edelweiss is his in every version.
