Cosmo Brown: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1952 film
Cosmo's showpiece, Make 'Em Laugh, was one of only two new songs in the 1952 film. Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown wrote it, but it so closely resembles Cole Porter's Be a Clown that co-director Stanley Donen called it "100% plagiarism." The other new number, Moses Supposes, also features Cosmo alongside Don, and Donald O'Connor, who played Cosmo, had to stay in bed in the hospital for several days after filming it.
On stage, Roy Castle played Cosmo in the 1983 London Palladium premiere, and Peter Slutsker originated him on Broadway in 1985, where he sings Fit as a Fiddle and Moses Supposes with Don.
