Who is Delray Farrell?

Delray owns the Beale Street club where his sister Felicia performs, and he built that business as one of the few paths to independence available to a Black man in early 1950s Memphis. He is fiercely protective of Felicia and deeply skeptical of Huey Calhoun's interest in her, aware of the real danger their relationship poses in a segregated city.

Over the course of the show, Delray's guarded pragmatism sometimes puts him at odds with both his sister and Huey, even as he shares their love of the music and, eventually, grudging respect for Huey's commitment to promoting it.

Delray's role in Memphis

Delray is a supporting role that grounds the show's world in the practical realities of running a Black owned business under segregation, giving voice to caution where Huey and Felicia often act on impulse. The part calls for a strong, commanding presence and solid R&B vocal ability within the ensemble numbers set at the club.

J. Bernard Calloway originated the role in the 2009 Broadway production. Delray's skepticism toward Huey provides some of the show's clearest dramatization of the real risks facing Felicia and Huey's relationship.
