Broadway compared with the 1972 film
On screen, Don Quixote's singing voice is not the star's own. Peter O'Toole, who played Cervantes and Quixote in the 1972 film, could not sing, and his songs were dubbed by Simon Gilbert. Richard Kiley, who originated the role in New York in 1965 and won the Tony Award for it, screen tested for the film but was not cast. The film also cut What Does He Want of Me? and To Each His Dulcinea, added an opening showing Cervantes's arrest by the Inquisition, and drew brutal reviews.
Before the musical existed, Lee J. Cobb played the role in Dale Wasserman's 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote.
Who is Don Quixote?
Don Quixote is the alter ego of Miguel de Cervantes, imagined within a story-within-a-story as an aging man who reinvents himself as a knight errant determined to right the world's wrongs. He sees nobility and beauty where others see only a harsh, disappointing reality, chasing his own vision of honor even when it makes him look foolish to everyone around him. That tension between idealism and a grim, practical world is the emotional core of the character.
His devotion to an impossible dream, and his insistence on treating people with dignity regardless of how the world treats him, gives the character a lasting resonance that goes well beyond the comic elements of his quest.
