Elle Woods: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 2001 film
Laura Bell Bundy originated Elle on Broadway in 2007 and earned a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical; Reese Witherspoon played her in Robert Luketic's 2001 film. The musical's biggest change is the ending: both versions jump ahead to Elle's graduation, but where the film has Emmett planning to propose to her, the show has Elle propose to Emmett, who happily accepts. The stage version also sharpens the Callahan turn: when he forcibly kisses her, she slaps him and he fires her.
In 2008, Bailey Hanks won the role on MTV's reality competition The Search for Elle Woods and played it until the Broadway production closed.
