Gussie Carnegie

Who is Gussie Carnegie?

Gussie is ambitious and calculating, a stage star who uses her fame and connections to pull Frank away from his early collaborators and toward more commercially minded projects. Her affair with Frank, and the marriage that follows it, marks one of the clearest turning points in his slide from idealism to compromise.

Because the story moves backward, audiences see the fallout of Gussie and Frank's relationship before witnessing its glamorous, ambitious beginnings, coloring her charm with an awareness of what it will eventually cost the people around her.

Gussie's role in Merrily We Roll Along

Gussie is a supporting role featured in Growing Up and related ensemble material that reflects her theatrical ambition and taste for reinvention. The part is a showy one, suited to a performer who can play glamour and calculation in equal measure.

Her presence in the show sharpens the contrast between Frank's early collaborators, who valued the work itself, and the more transactional relationships that come to define his later career.
