Janis: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 2004 film and 2024 movie musical
Janis has a different last name in every version. In the 2004 film she is Janis Ian, played by Lizzy Caplan; the Broadway musical renamed her Janis Sarkisian, originated by Barrett Wilbert Weed in 2018; and the 2024 movie musical made her Janis 'Imi'ike, played by Auli'i Cravalho.
On stage and in the 2024 film she is also a co-narrator with Damian, opening the story with A Cautionary Tale. Cravalho's Janis keeps her big stage numbers, Apex Predator and I'd Rather Be Me, and joins Revenge Party.

Who is Janis?
Janis is a fiercely independent, artistically inclined student who exists firmly outside her school's social hierarchy, in part due to a past falling out with Regina George. Alongside her best friend Damian, she takes Cady under her wing when she first arrives, then hatches the plan to have Cady infiltrate and dismantle the Plastics from within.
As Cady drifts further into Regina's world and away from their friendship, Janis's hurt and anger become a driving force in the show's back half, culminating in a confrontation that forces both girls to be honest about what they actually want from each other and from their own identities.
Janis's role in Mean Girls
Janis is a supporting role, though a central one, co narrating the show alongside Damian and requiring a strong belt voice with an edge of defiance, particularly in her Act Two anthem I'd Rather Be Me. The role calls for an actor who can be both wry and quietly wounded.
Barrett Wilbert Weed originated the role on Broadway, praised for her sharp comic delivery and raw emotional honesty. Audiences remember Janis for giving the show its conscience, the character whose hurt feelings ultimately matter more than the social games everyone else is playing.
Janis: frequently asked questions
What is Janis's last name in the Mean Girls musical?
In the Broadway musical, Janis's full name is Janis Sarkisian, originated by Barrett Wilbert Weed in 2018. That differs from the original 2004 film, where she is Janis Ian, and from the 2024 movie musical, where she becomes Janis 'Imi'ike, played by Auli'i Cravalho.
Why does Janis have a different last name in the 2024 Mean Girls movie?
The 2024 movie musical gave Janis the surname 'Imi'ike, a Hawaiian word meaning to search for knowledge, which matches the heritage of Native Hawaiian star Auli'i Cravalho; Cravalho has called the name another ounce of representation. The Broadway musical had already dropped the 2004 film's surname, Ian, in favor of Sarkisian.
