Broadway compared with the 1958 film
The biggest change for Joe Hardy on screen is how little he sings. Stephen Douglass originated the young slugger on Broadway in 1955, but the 1958 film cast Tab Hunter, a movie star who had also become a pop star. The film then cut Near to You, The Game, A Man Doesn't Know and the reprise of Heart, which left Hunter with very few songs.
Around him, most of the Broadway company carried their roles to Hollywood, so Hunter's Joe plays opposite the stage originals, Gwen Verdon as Lola and Ray Walston as Applegate, and he shares Two Lost Souls with Verdon and Goodbye Old Girl with his older self, Joe Boyd.
