Eddie Redmayne plays Marius in the 2012 film, singing live on set, and suggested to director Tom Hooper that one of his songs should begin a cappella. Marius was created on stage by Michael Ball in London in 1985 and by David Bryant on Broadway in 1987.
His story is essentially the stage version. He falls for Cosette in A Heart Full of Love, survives the barricade when every other student dies, mourns them in Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, and at his wedding forces Thénardier to reveal where Valjean is, after learning that Valjean carried him from the barricade. The film does shorten The Attack on Rue Plumet.
