Who is Mark Cohen?

Mark is an aspiring documentary filmmaker who spends much of Rent behind a camera, capturing the lives of his roommates and friends as they navigate love, illness, and poverty in a rapidly changing city. He serves as the audience's window into the world of the show, often stepping outside the action to comment on what he is witnessing.

Unlike several of his friends, Mark is not dealing with HIV, which gives him a slightly different vantage point: he is an observer as much as a participant, watching people he loves struggle while he tries to figure out his own place in their story.
