Who is Marvin?

Marvin has left his wife Trina and their son Jason for his lover Whizzer Brown, but he insists on keeping everyone close, wanting his ex-wife, his son, his lover, and eventually his psychiatrist all bound together as one extended, unconventional family. His need for control and approval often puts him at odds with the very people he claims to want near him.

Over the course of the show, Marvin is forced to reckon with how his demands affect those around him, and the arrival of illness in the second act strips away much of his bluster, leaving a more vulnerable, remorseful version of the character.

Marvin's role in Falsettos

Marvin is a lead role in Falsettos, carrying the emotional through-line of the entire piece from comic self-absorption to genuine grief. The part demands a performer capable of handling William Finn's rapid-fire, conversational music while making Marvin's flaws sympathetic rather than simply frustrating.

Michael Rupert originated the role on Broadway in 1992. Audiences remember Marvin as a flawed but deeply human figure, a man whose messy insistence on redefining family for himself feels strikingly ahead of its time.
