Who is Monty Navarro?
Monty discovers that his late mother was disowned by the wealthy D'Ysquith family, and that he stands eight relatives away from inheriting the earldom she was denied. Determined to claim his rightful place, he sets about eliminating each obstructing D'Ysquith one by one, all while maintaining a charming, sympathetic public face.
Throughout the show he juggles his growing criminal enterprise with a complicated romantic life, torn between the glamorous Sibella Hallward and the earnest Phoebe D'Ysquith, giving the character both comic momentum and unexpected moral shading.
Monty's role in A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder
Monty is a lead role and the show's narrator, requiring a performer with a strong, versatile voice and impeccable comic timing to carry both the murders and the romantic entanglements, featured in numbers like I've Decided to Marry You and Poison in My Pocket.
Bryce Pinkham originated the role on Broadway and earned a Tony nomination for his performance, praised for keeping Monty likable and even sympathetic despite his growing body count, a tricky balancing act at the center of the show's dark comedy.
Monty Navarro on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), filmed from the same novel
Monty's screen counterpart has a different name and heritage. Roy Horniman's 1907 novel made its hero the half-Jewish Israel Rank; the 1949 Ealing film Kind Hearts and Coronets turned him into half-Italian Louis Mazzini, played by Dennis Price; and the musical made him Monty Navarro, whose mother eloped with a Castilian musician. Bryce Pinkham originated Monty on Broadway in 2013 and earned a Tony nomination.
The endings turn on a memoir. Louis walks free but realizes he has left his written confession in his cell. Monty's is handed back by a guard, and Miss Shingle then reveals that she, not Monty, poisoned the last earl.
