Ponyboy Curtis on stage vs screen

Broadway compared with the 1983 film

Brody Grant originated Ponyboy on Broadway in 2024; C. Thomas Howell played him in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film. The musical keeps him 14 and at the center of the Greasers' feud with the Socs, and adds a frame: throughout the show Ponyboy is writing in a notebook, and the finale reveals his words to be the opening narration of The Outsiders itself.

He sings throughout, from the opening Tulsa '67 to Great Expectations and his late duet with Johnny, Stay Gold. In the film, the stay gold idea comes through Robert Frost's poem Nothing Gold Can Stay, which Ponyboy recites to Johnny.

Who is Ponyboy Curtis?

Ponyboy Curtis is a fourteen year old Greaser in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma, who narrates the story of his gang's ongoing conflict with the wealthier Socs. Thoughtful and more introspective than many of his friends, Ponyboy is caught between the loyalty he feels to his gang and a growing awareness that violence is consuming people he loves.

His bond with his best friend Johnny Cade and his complicated relationship with his older brothers Darry and Sodapop shape much of his arc. After a violent confrontation forces Ponyboy and Johnny to flee, Ponyboy is pushed to grow up quickly, grappling with loss and the question of whether the divide between Greasers and Socs is as fixed as it seems.

Ponyboy's role in The Outsiders

Ponyboy is a lead role and the show's narrator, requiring a young performer capable of carrying both the emotional narration and the physical demands of the show's fight choreography. The part calls for a clear, expressive voice suited to Americana and rock influenced songwriting.

Brody Grant originated the role on Broadway when The Outsiders opened in 2024. Audiences remember Ponyboy as the emotional entry point into the show's world, a narrator whose sensitivity makes the violence around him land with real weight rather than spectacle.
