Sidney Poitier did not sing Porgy in the 1959 film: his singing voice was dubbed by Robert McFerrin, who received no screen credit. On stage, Todd Duncan created the role at the 1935 Broadway premiere, part of a cast of classically trained African American singers, and Norm Lewis played Porgy opposite Audra McDonald in the 2012 Broadway revival.
The film also changes how Porgy communicates. Gershwin set nearly all the opera's dialogue as sung recitative, but N. Richard Nash's screenplay turned virtually all of it into spoken dialogue, as the cut-down 1942 stage revival had done, so Poitier's Porgy speaks many lines that Duncan's Porgy sang.
