The stage Sally Bowles is English; Liza Minnelli's Sally in the 1972 film is American. Jill Haworth originated the role on Broadway in 1966, and Judi Dench played her in London in 1968. Minnelli won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
The film also gave Sally her most famous songs. Kander and Ebb wrote Mein Herr and Money, Money for the movie and added Maybe This Time, a 1964 song. On stage Sally originally sang Don't Tell Mama and the title song, Cabaret; later revivals added Maybe This Time and Mein Herr to her stage repertoire.
