On screen Sandy is not Dumbrowski at all. For the 1978 film she became Sandy Olsson, an Australian newcomer, because Olivia Newton-John negotiated the change to avoid faking an American accent, and her Sandy was also made less passive. Carole Demas originated Sandy Dumbrowski on Broadway in 1972.
The film also gave Sandy her best-known songs: Hopelessly Devoted to You, which earned an Academy Award nomination, and You're the One That I Want, both by John Farrar and later added to stage revivals. Her stage solo is It's Raining on Prom Night. Laura Osnes won the role in the 2007 Broadway revival through an NBC reality show, and Julianne Hough played Sandy in Grease: Live.
