Broadway compared with the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The same scene plays out very differently. In the 1975 film, Lancelot, played by John Cleese, answers a distress note, storms Swamp Castle, and slaughters several wedding guests before discovering that the damsel in distress is the effeminate Prince Herbert. In Spamalot, that discovery leads Lancelot to realize he is gay, and Herbert helps him embrace it in His Name Is Lancelot, a disco number.
Hank Azaria created the stage role on Broadway in 2005, and Taran Killam opened the 2023 revival as Lancelot before Alex Brightman took over in 2024.
