Broadway compared with the 1971 film
Tevye went to the screen without his Broadway creator. Zero Mostel originated the role in 1964, but director Norman Jewison felt Mostel's larger-than-life personality would make film audiences see Mostel rather than Tevye, and cast Topol, who had played Tevye in the original 1967 West End production. Topol won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
The 1971 film also dropped two stage songs, Now I Have Everything and The Rumor (I Just Heard), and trimmed the lyrics of Tevye's Dream to avoid repetition.
Who is Tevye?
Tevye lives in the small Jewish village of Anatevka with his wife and daughters, working hard to provide for his family while leaning on faith and custom to make sense of a difficult life.
