The Duke of Monroth: from the film to Broadway

Broadway compared with the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film

The stage Duke is more charismatic and, in the end, less murderous. In Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film, Richard Roxburgh's Duke vows to kill Christian, and Zidler and the company have to thwart his bodyguard's attempts during the opening-night performance. In the musical, Satine stands up to him before the final performance, and he simply leaves the Moulin Rouge without trying to kill Christian after the lovers reunite.

The musical gives him menace in other ways: the dancer Nini warns Satine that he once threw a vial of acid in the face of a woman who betrayed him. Tam Mutu originated the Duke in Boston and on Broadway, and later Broadway replacements included Andy Karl and Taye Diggs.

Who is the Duke of Monroth?

The Duke is a wealthy aristocrat whose financial backing keeps the Moulin Rouge afloat, in exchange for which he expects Satine's exclusive attention and, ultimately, her hand. His possessiveness turns increasingly controlling and dangerous once he suspects Satine's affections lie elsewhere, with Christian.

As the story's chief antagonist, the Duke represents the transactional, controlling side of love and commerce that stands in direct opposition to the bohemian ideals Christian and Satine's romance is built on.

The Duke's role in Moulin Rouge!

The Duke of Monroth is a supporting role that functions as the show's primary antagonist, requiring a performer who can shift convincingly from icy control to real menace as the character's jealousy escalates across the show.

Tam Mutu originated the role in the Broadway company, bringing a controlled, simmering intensity to the part that keeps the threat to Christian and Satine's romance credible throughout the show's more spectacle driven scenes.
