Tommy Ross comes to the stage almost directly from the screen, because Lawrence D. Cohen wrote both the screenplay for Brian De Palma's 1976 film and the book of the musical. In both, Tommy is Sue Snell's boyfriend who takes Carrie to the prom at Sue's request; in the musical he is killed with the other students when Carrie destroys the prom.
William Katt played Tommy in the film. Paul Gyngell originated the role on Broadway in 1988, and Derek Klena played him in the 2012 Off-Broadway revival.
