The story of Frozen

Frozen tells the story of Elsa and Anna, princesses of Arendelle, whose close childhood bond is broken after Elsa accidentally injures Anna with her magical ice powers. Elsa withdraws in fear of hurting anyone again, and years of isolation follow until her powers are exposed on her coronation day, plunging the kingdom into an eternal winter.

Anna sets out to find her sister and reverse the curse, gathering unlikely allies along the way in the ice harvester Kristoff, his reindeer Sven, and the endlessly cheerful snowman Olaf. At its core, the show is about the bond between sisters and the idea that an act of true love, not necessarily romantic, is what ultimately breaks the spell.

The music and the makers

The score was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the husband and wife songwriting team who wrote the songs for the original animated film, with a book by Jennifer Lee, who also wrote and directed the movie. For the stage version they expanded the film's soundtrack with new songs to deepen the characters and fill out a full length musical.

Signature numbers carried over from the film, including "Let It Go," "For the First Time in Forever," and "Do You Want to Build a Snowman," anchor a score built on soaring pop ballads and warm, comic character songs, giving the stage production a sound instantly familiar to fans of the movie while still offering new material.

Frozen on Broadway

Frozen opened on Broadway in March 2018 at the St. James Theatre, with Caissie Levy as Elsa and Patti Murin as Anna, following an out of town tryout in Denver. The production was praised for its elaborate special effects, including Elsa's onstage transformation during "Let It Go," and it drew large family audiences throughout its run.

The Broadway run closed in 2020 amid the pandemic shutdown and did not reopen. Frozen also ran in London's West End at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, from September 2021 to September 2024, and continues in international and touring productions. It remains a notable example of Disney's continued success translating its animated film catalog into large scale Broadway spectacle.
