Anita is the only West Side Story role to win two Oscars: Rita Moreno won Best Supporting Actress for the 1961 film, and Ariana DeBose won the same award for the 2021 film, becoming the first Afro-Latina and openly queer woman of color to do so. Moreno returned in 2021 as Valentina, an expanded version of Doc, who sings Somewhere.
Chita Rivera created Anita on Broadway in 1957. On stage America is sung by Anita and the Shark girls; both films add the men. Some of Moreno's singing in 1961 was dubbed by Betty Wand. In the 2021 film, the Jets attempt to rape Anita at Doc's store.
