The 2021 film gives Tony a darker past: Ansel Elgort's Tony has served a year in prison for nearly beating a rival gang member to death, which scared him into reforming. Neither the stage show nor the 1961 film has that backstory.
Larry Kert created Tony on Broadway in 1957. In the 1961 film, Richard Beymer plays him with his singing dubbed by Jimmy Bryant. His songs, Something's Coming, Maria, and Tonight, carry through every version, and in the 2021 film he also joins Riff and the Jets in Cool. On stage and screen, Tony is shot dead by Chino.
