Bill Calhoun on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with the 1953 film
Harold Lang originated Bill Calhoun on Broadway in 1948, and Tommy Rall played him in MGM's 1953 film. The film surrounds Bill with a notable dance team: Bobby Van and Bob Fosse played Bianca's other suitors, and Fosse was allowed to choreograph a short segment of From This Moment On, a Cole Porter song taken from his musical Out of This World and added for the film.
Bill's plot is the same in both versions: he signs Fred's name to a gambling IOU, which brings two gangsters to the theatre, and Lois scolds him in Why Can't You Behave? Corbin Bleu played Bill in the 2019 Broadway revival.
Who is Bill Calhoun?
Bill plays Lucentio in the show within the show and, offstage, is a compulsive gambler whose habit of signing Fred Graham's name to his IOUs sets off the plot's farcical gangster subplot. He loves Lois but struggles to earn her full trust given his unreliability.
His carefree, easily distracted nature makes him a natural match for Lois, and their relationship provides much of the show's lighter comic energy alongside the more fraught Fred and Lilli storyline.
Bill Calhoun's role in Kiss Me, Kate
Bill is a supporting role known primarily as a dance part, built around the athletic solo Bianca and ensemble numbers that showcase the production's choreography. The role favors a performer with strong dance technique over vocal power.
Harold Lang originated the role in 1948, and it has since served as a showcase for dancer performers, giving the production some of its most energetic staging.
