Lois Lane on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with the 1953 film
In the 1953 film, Ann Miller's Lois takes over Too Darn Hot, using it as her audition number. On stage the song belongs to Paul and the ensemble, who sing it in the alley behind the theatre during intermission. The film also gives Lois a past with Lilli's fiance, Tex, whom she recognizes as an old flame.
Lisa Kirk originated Lois on Broadway in 1948. Her big solo, Always True to You in My Fashion, in which she admits she loves Bill but cannot resist other men, is kept in the film, as is her scolding of Bill in Why Can't You Behave? Stephanie Styles played Lois in the 2019 Broadway revival.
Who is Lois Lane?
Lois plays Bianca in the musical within the musical and, offstage, is Bill Calhoun's girlfriend, though she is not shy about flirting with Fred Graham and other admirers. She is breezy and self aware about her own inconstancy, treating romance as something to enjoy rather than agonize over.
Her relationship with Bill, complicated by his gambling debts, runs as a lighter counterpoint to Fred and Lilli's more serious reconciliation, giving the show a second romantic pairing with a very different tone.
Lois Lane's role in Kiss Me, Kate
Lois is a supporting role built for a triple threat performer, headlined by the show stopping comic number Always True to You in My Fashion, in which she cheerfully lists her many suitors. The part demands sharp comic delivery and strong dance ability, since Lois anchors much of the show's livelier choreography.
Lisa Kirk originated the role in 1948, and it has remained a favorite showcase for performers who can combine comedy, singing, and dance in a single number.
