Celie on stage vs screen

Broadway compared with the 1985 film and 2023 movie musical

The biggest screen difference for Celie is her romance with Shug Avery: for the 1985 film, Steven Spielberg deliberately toned it down to a simple kiss, saying parts of the relationship would not fit a PG-13 rating. Whoopi Goldberg played Celie in that non-musical adaptation of Alice Walker's novel and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

The 2023 movie musical cast Fantasia Barrino, who had played Celie on Broadway in 2007 as the first American Idol winner on Broadway, with Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as young Celie. LaChanze originated Celie on Broadway in 2005 and won the Tony Award, as did Cynthia Erivo in the 2015 revival.

Who is Celie?

Celie begins the story as a poor, uneducated young woman in the early twentieth century South, separated from her beloved sister Nettie and forced into an abusive marriage to a man she calls Mister. For much of the show she is defined by silence, having learned to survive by staying invisible and enduring cruelty rather than resisting it.

Over the course of the musical, Celie's relationships with the blues singer Shug Avery and the fiercely independent Sofia help her discover her own worth, her sexuality, and eventually her voice. Her arc from a woman who has been told she is nothing to one who claims her own life is the emotional spine of the entire show.

Celie's role in The Color Purple

Celie is the show's lead role and one of the most demanding in the modern musical theatre repertoire, requiring a performer who can convincingly age across decades and shift from quiet restraint to full voiced power. Her Act Two solo, I'm Here, is the score's emotional peak and a signature audition piece for the role.

LaChanze originated the role on Broadway in 2005 and won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance, and Cynthia Erivo won the same award for the role in the 2015 revival. Fantasia Barrino later played Celie in the 2023 film adaptation, further cementing the character's place as one of Broadway's most celebrated dramatic roles.
