Shug Avery on stage vs screen

Broadway compared with the 1985 film and 2023 movie musical

Shug's best-known screen song was not written for the stage. In Steven Spielberg's 1985 film, Margaret Avery sings Miss Celie's Blues (Sister), with her singing voice dubbed by Táta Vega, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The 2023 movie musical, with Taraji P. Henson as Shug, brought that song back alongside the stage score. Spielberg also toned Shug and Celie's romance down to a single kiss.

Elisabeth Withers originated Shug on Broadway in 2005, and Jennifer Hudson played her in the 2015 revival.

Who is Shug Avery?

Shug is a glamorous, self assured blues singer who enters Celie's household as Mister's longtime mistress, and whose confidence and independence stand in sharp contrast to the life Celie has known. Rather than treating Celie with the dismissiveness others show her, Shug befriends her, and their relationship grows into a deep bond that awakens Celie's sense of her own beauty and worth.

Shug carries her own complications, including a difficult relationship with her preacher father and a pattern of restlessness in love, but she consistently returns to Celie as a source of genuine care. Her presence is the catalyst that begins Celie's transformation.

Shug's role in The Color Purple

Shug is a lead role built around a powerful, sultry vocal sound suited to the show's blues and jazz influenced numbers, including her showcase Push da Button and the tender duet Too Beautiful for Words shared with Celie. The role demands a performer who can command a stage with charisma while also conveying real vulnerability underneath.

Elisabeth Withers originated the role in the 2005 Broadway production, and Jennifer Hudson took on the part in the 2015 revival, bringing her own star power to the character. Shug remains a favorite among performers for the way the role combines glamour, humor, and emotional depth.
