Broadway compared with the 1969 film
Barbra Streisand, not Carol Channing, played Dolly on screen. Channing originated the role on Broadway in 1964, while Gene Kelly's 1969 film starred Streisand opposite Walter Matthau's Horace Vandergelder, with Louis Armstrong as the orchestra leader.
The film also reshapes Dolly's score. Just Leave Everything to Me, written for Streisand, replaced her stage number I Put My Hand In (heard only as an instrumental during the dance contest), and the film added Love Is Only Love, a song cut from Mame. Later stage Dollys have won major awards: Bette Midler took the Tony in the 2017 Broadway revival, and Imelda Staunton won an Olivier for the 2024 London revival.
