Barbra Streisand owns this role on stage and screen: she originated Fanny on Broadway in 1964, repeated it in London in 1966, and made her film debut in William Wyler's 1968 film, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film interpolates songs the real Brice made famous, My Man, Second Hand Rose, and I'd Rather Be Blue, that are not in the stage score, with My Man as the finale.
The story began as Isobel Lennart's screenplay for a drama called My Man, written for producer Ray Stark, Brice's son-in-law. Later stage Fannys include Sheridan Smith in London (2015 to 2016) and Beanie Feldstein and Lea Michele in the 2022 Broadway revival.
