Ethel Merman created Rose on Broadway in 1959 but did not win the Tony, losing to Mary Martin in The Sound of Music. On screen, Rosalind Russell played Rose in the 1962 film, with her gravelly singing voice blended with that of contralto Lisa Kirk, and won a Golden Globe. Bette Midler won a Golden Globe for the 1993 CBS TV movie, which used the original orchestrations and Jerome Robbins's choreography.
Rose's Turn, her final breakdown, survives in the 1962 film. On stage, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and Patti LuPone all won Tonys as Rose, and Imelda Staunton won an Olivier.
