Heather Duke: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1988 film
Shannen Doherty played Heather Duke in the 1988 film; Alice Lee originated the role in the 2014 Off-Broadway musical. In both, Duke rises to power after Heather Chandler's death. The musical makes that transfer of power literal: Duke claims Chandler's red scrunchie and becomes even more tyrannical than her predecessor. At the finale, Veronica takes the scrunchie away from her, ending the era of social ridicule.
In the film's climax, Veronica confronts and condemns Duke, then invites Martha Dunnstock to spend prom night watching movies.
Who is Heather Duke?
Heather Duke starts the show as a follower within the Heathers clique, often overshadowed by the group's more dominant personalities. As the story unfolds and the power structure at Westerburg High shifts, she seizes the opportunity to assert herself in ways that reveal a colder, more calculating side.
Her arc is essentially about ambition and the corrupting pull of power, making her one of the more layered members of the trio despite her supporting status.
Heather Duke's role in Heathers
Heather Duke is a supporting role that grows in importance as the musical progresses. The part rewards a performer who can convincingly play both insecurity and sudden, sharp-edged confidence as the character's status changes.
Musically, the role fits within the show's pop-rock ensemble sound, with opportunities to stand out in group numbers as Heather Duke's presence becomes more central to the story.
Why Heather Duke resonates
Audiences respond to Heather Duke because her transformation feels uncomfortably familiar, the quiet friend who becomes just as ruthless once given the chance. She offers a compact study in how power reshapes personality.
For performers, the role is appealing because of that visible arc, giving even a supporting cast member a clear character journey to play across the show.
