Jason "J.D." Dean: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1988 film
Christian Slater played J.D. in the 1988 film; Ryan McCartan originated him in the 2014 Off-Broadway musical. Both versions end with J.D. killed by his own bomb, but the details shift. In the film he detonates a bomb strapped to his chest. On stage, Veronica carries the detonator to the empty football field, and J.D. convinces her to let him take it; the explosion kills him.
The musical also sets his romance and his menace to music: he and Veronica share the duets Dead Girl Walking and Seventeen, and Meant to Be Yours is his number as his bombing plot takes shape.
