Who is Leo Frank?
Leo is a reserved, meticulous Brooklyn-raised Jewish man managing a pencil factory in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913, uneasy in a Southern culture he never fully feels part of. When a young employee, Mary Phagan, is found murdered, prejudice and public pressure quickly turn suspicion toward him despite thin evidence, and he is convicted in a deeply compromised trial.
As Leo faces the growing threat against his life, the story also traces the deepening of his marriage to Lucille, who becomes his fiercest advocate, transforming a formal, somewhat distant relationship into one of genuine partnership under unbearable pressure.
Leo's role in Parade
Leo is a lead role requiring a restrained, internal quality balanced against moments of real emotional rupture, featured in songs like How Can I Call This Home and All the Wasted Time. The part demands an actor comfortable playing quiet discomfort rather than overt charisma.
Brent Carver originated the role in the original 1998 Broadway production, and Ben Platt starred in the acclaimed 2023 Broadway revival, earning a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for a performance widely praised for its restraint and heartbreak.
Leo Frank on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with The Murder of Mary Phagan, NBC's 1988 miniseries on the same case
Peter Gallagher played Leo Frank in NBC's 1988 miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan, a separate dramatization of the real case, but that version makes Governor John Slaton, played by Jack Lemmon, its central figure. Parade keeps the focus on Leo and his marriage. Brent Carver originated Leo on Broadway in 1998, and Ben Platt starred in the Tony-winning 2023 revival.
On stage, Leo sings How Can I Call This Home? about feeling like an outsider in Georgia, and later It's Hard to Speak My Heart and All the Wasted Time as he waits for his fate. The real Leo Frank was born in Cuero, Texas, and raised in Brooklyn before moving to Atlanta to run a pencil factory.
