Who is Lulu?
Lulu is Maizy's older sister, a blunt, no nonsense presence in Cob County who runs the local bar and has little patience for romantic nonsense. She serves as a grounding, comic voice throughout the show, often cutting through the sentimentality of the central love story with dry observations.
Her own storyline develops alongside Beau's brother Peanut, giving the show a secondary romance that plays out mostly through comic bickering. Lulu's directness makes her one of the show's most quotable characters, and her journey adds warmth to a character who initially seems all edges.
Lulu's role in Shucked
Lulu is a supporting role, but one built around a show stopping eleven o'clock number that requires serious vocal power and comic control in equal measure. The part demands a performer who can hold a room with both belted vocals and sharp comic timing.
Alex Newell originated the role on Broadway when Shucked opened in 2023 and won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for the performance, becoming one of the first two openly nonbinary performers to win a Tony. Audiences remember Lulu as one of the breakout roles of the show, thanks largely to that award winning turn.
