Broadway compared with the 2014 Disney film
Meryl Streep earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress as the Witch in Disney's 2014 film; Bernadette Peters originated the role on Broadway in 1987. The biggest change to the Witch's story is Rapunzel's fate. On stage, Rapunzel is killed by the Giant. In the film she refuses to cooperate with the Witch and flees with her prince.
Streep's Witch also got a new song, She'll Be Back, which was filmed but cut for slowing the story. Her exit changed too: on stage she throws away the beans and vanishes during Last Midnight, while on screen she melts into a pit of tar.
