Wicked: stage vs screen

Jon M. Chu turned the Broadway musical that opened at the Gershwin Theatre in 2003 into two films: Wicked (2024) covers Act One, and Wicked: For Good (2025) covers Act Two. Most of Stephen Schwartz's score made it to the screen, but the films add new songs, stretch out several numbers, and fill in story the stage show only hints at. Here are the biggest differences.

Stage
Broadway musical (2003)
Screen
Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good (2025)

1. One act per film

On stage, Act One ends with Defying Gravity and the intermission follows. The first film keeps the same order of songs as Act One, from No One Mourns the Wicked to Defying Gravity, but runs about 160 minutes, far longer than that act plays in the theatre. The filmmakers said splitting the story in two let them keep the plot intact instead of cutting it down.

2. Two new songs in Wicked: For Good

The second film adds two songs written for the screen. Elphaba sings No Place Like Home, which Cynthia Erivo helped write, and Glinda gets The Girl in the Bubble, which is placed between two halves of March of the Witch Hunters. The rest of Act Two's songs, including Thank Goodness, Wonderful, As Long as You're Mine, No Good Deed, and For Good, are still there.

3. Bigger versions of familiar numbers

Several Act One songs are longer on screen. Dancing Through Life moves into a rotating library at Shiz with an extended dance break, Popular gains extra key changes, and Defying Gravity adds a new vocal section and an orchestral extension before the cliffhanger ending. One Short Day is expanded to include a show by the Emerald City Players.

4. Something Bad becomes a meeting of Animals

On stage, Something Bad is a private conversation between Doctor Dillamond and Elphaba. In the film it becomes a secret meeting of talking Animals at Dillamond's home off campus, and Dillamond is one of the last Animal professors at Shiz rather than the only one. The second film goes further, showing Animals forced to build the Yellow Brick Road and Elphaba trying to free them.

5. New characters and backstory

The first film adds characters who never appear on stage, including Miss Coddle, the head of Shiz, Elphaba's childhood nanny Dulcibear, and Galinda's parents. It also shows flashbacks to Elphaba being mocked as a child. Madame Morrible's job changes from headmistress to Dean of Sorcery Studies.

6. Nessarose's story is reworked

Wicked: For Good revises The Wicked Witch of the East to remove the suggestion that Nessarose's disability is something to be fixed. Her resentment now centers on her relationship with Boq, and once Elphaba enchants her shoes she flies instead of walking. The film also adds a decree that stops Munchkins and Animals from leaving Munchkinland, which is why Boq cannot go. The tornado is shown on screen, with Nessarose searching for Boq when Dorothy's house lands on her.

7. Dorothy stays in the background

Dorothy appears on screen in the second film, but her face is never clearly shown, which keeps the focus on Elphaba and Glinda. The ending follows the stage show in its essentials: Elphaba fakes her death and leaves Oz with Fiyero, now a Scarecrow, while Glinda stays behind to lead. The film adds a final moment in which the Grimmerie opens for Glinda.

8. Original Broadway stars make a cameo

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who created Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, appear in the first film as leading members of the Emerald City Players during One Short Day. The films also tone down the sexual content of the stage show to earn a PG rating.

Wicked movie vs musical: FAQs

Is the Wicked movie the same as the musical?

Mostly. The two films follow the Broadway story and keep nearly every song, but they add new characters, new scenes about the Animals of Oz, longer versions of several numbers, and two new songs in Wicked: For Good.

Were any songs cut from the Wicked movies?

No major song from the Broadway score was dropped. Each act's songs appear in the matching film, and Wicked: For Good adds No Place Like Home for Elphaba and The Girl in the Bubble for Glinda.

Why is the Wicked movie split into two parts?

The first film adapts Act One and ends with Defying Gravity, and the second adapts Act Two. The filmmakers chose two parts so they would not have to cut story or songs to fit one movie.

Are Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in the Wicked movie?

Yes. The original Broadway Elphaba and Glinda have a cameo in the first film as members of the Emerald City Players during One Short Day.
