Carole King

Who is Carole King?

Carole King begins the show as a teenage songwriter selling her work to music publishers in New York, quickly marrying fellow writer Gerry Goffin and building one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the early 1960s. As their marriage frays under the weight of Goffin's infidelity and struggles, King continues writing, eventually finding the confidence to perform her own songs.

Her journey from behind the scenes hitmaker to celebrated solo artist forms the emotional spine of the show, culminating in the songs that would become her landmark 1971 album Tapestry and cement her as a defining voice of American popular music.

Carole's role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Carole is the lead role and narrator of the show's biographical arc, requiring a performer with both strong pop vocals and the range to age convincingly from a teenager into an established artist. The role includes performances of dozens of hit songs across the show's runtime.

Jessie Mueller originated the role on Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for a performance widely praised for its warmth and vocal command. Audiences remember Carole King as a rare musical theatre lead built entirely around a real, beloved songwriter's own catalog.
