Don Kirshner

Who is Don Kirshner?

Don Kirshner runs the music publishing company where teenage Carole King first sells her songs, and he becomes a mentor figure to her, Gerry Goffin, and their friends Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Business minded but genuinely invested in his writers, Kirshner pushes them to keep producing hits while also offering guidance through their personal struggles.

His presence represents the commercial engine behind the era's pop songwriting factory system, and his belief in Carole's talent becomes especially important later in the show as she considers stepping out from behind the scenes to perform her own material.

Don's role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Don is a supporting role functioning largely as a mentor and authority figure, requiring an actor who can convey both shrewd business instincts and real warmth toward his young songwriters. The role anchors several scenes set inside the publishing office that structure the show's early acts.

Jeb Brown originated the role on Broadway, bringing steady, paternal presence to the part. Audiences remember Don Kirshner as the industry figure whose faith in Carole King's talent helps set her eventual solo career in motion.
