Crutchie: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1992 Disney film
Even the spelling changed: the 1992 film's disabled newsie is Crutchy, played by Marty Belafsky, while the stage musical's Crutchie was originated on Broadway by Andrew Keenan-Bolger in 2012. In both versions he ends up locked in the Refuge, the corrupt juvenile detention center run by Warden Snyder. On screen the Delancey brothers capture him during the strike; on stage he is seized and badly beaten when Pulitzer's goons and the police break up the newsies' first protest.
The musical gives Crutchie a voice from inside with Letter from the Refuge, his letter to Jack describing the filthy, abusive conditions. The song was not in the original Broadway staging; it was added for the national tour.
