The story of Newsies

Set in New York in 1899, Newsies follows a scrappy band of newspaper sellers, boys living hand to mouth on street-corner hustle, as they band together against powerful publishers who raise the price they must pay for papers to hawk. Led by a charismatic, quick-witted newsie, the strikers organize, rally the city, and discover that solidarity can move even the most entrenched men in power.

The show leans into themes of found family, class struggle, and the courage it takes for young people with little social standing to demand to be heard. It is loosely based on an actual newsboy strike, giving the underdog story a grounding in real labor history even as the musical heightens it for the stage.

The music and the makers

Newsies was composed by Alan Menken, the Disney legend behind scores for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, and his music here favors driving, anthemic rock and pop numbers built for big group dance breaks. The score mixes plaintive ballads with rousing ensemble songs designed to showcase athletic, gymnastic choreography.

The musical grew out of the 1992 Disney film of the same name, which had a modest theatrical run but developed a passionate fan following over the years. That grassroots enthusiasm helped fuel the stage adaptation's momentum when it eventually made the leap to Broadway.

Newsies opened in the early 2010s and quickly became known for its athletic, tap-and-acrobatics-infused dance sequences, which turned the ensemble of newsboys into the real showstopper of the evening. It appealed strongly to families and to dance enthusiasts, offering a feel-good, crowd-pleasing energy that stood apart from darker or more experimental fare running at the same time.
