Who is Gaston?

Gaston is the most admired man in his village, convinced that his looks and hunting prowess entitle him to Belle's hand in marriage. When she rejects him in favor of her books and her independence, his wounded pride curdles into obsession and eventually outright villainy, driving much of the show's conflict in its second half. He is surrounded by an entourage that feeds his ego, which makes his eventual unraveling feel both comic and genuinely dangerous.

Gaston works so well as a character because he is a recognizable type: charming on the surface, entitled underneath, and unable to accept that not everyone shares his high opinion of himself.
