Jafar: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1992 animated film and 2019 live-action film
Jonathan Freeman is Jafar in both media: he voiced the vizier in the 1992 animated film and originated the role on Broadway in 2014. His sidekick changes, though. On stage, Iago is not a parrot but a human henchman, played originally by Don Darryl Rivera, while Gilbert Gottfried voiced the bird on film.
The stage Jafar also sings more, joining Aladdin and Iago in Diamond in the Rough and taking his own reprise of Prince Ali, and he ends up sucked into a lamp of his own. Marwan Kenzari played Jafar in the 2019 live-action film.
Who is Jafar?
Jafar serves as the Sultan's closest advisor while secretly plotting to seize the throne for himself. He is the classic scheming courtier, all flattery and hidden ambition, using his cunning and his access to magic to work toward total control of the kingdom.
His presence drives much of the tension in the story. Every time Aladdin, Jasmine, or the Sultan makes a move toward happiness, Jafar is lurking nearby with a new scheme, which keeps the plot's stakes and pacing lively throughout the show.
Playing Jafar on stage
As a supporting role, Jafar does not carry the show the way Aladdin or Jasmine do, but he is essential to it. The part calls for a performer who can be deliciously theatrical: sharp comic timing, a commanding physical presence, and a voice that can shift from silky persuasion to booming menace.
