Broadway compared with the 1964 film
The Eliza who made the role famous did not get to film it. Julie Andrews originated Eliza on Broadway in 1956 and in London in 1958, but Jack Warner cast Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film, and Alan Jay Lerner told Andrews, who had moved on to his Camelot, that the studio wanted a name. Rex Harrison, by contrast, kept his role as Higgins and won the Oscar.
Hepburn's singing was judged inadequate and dubbed by Marni Nixon, who sang all of Eliza's songs except Just You Wait, where Hepburn's own voice survives in the harsh-toned sections. Lauren Ambrose played Eliza in the 2018 Broadway revival at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
