Meg Brockie on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with the 1954 film and 1966 TV film
Meg Brockie is played by Dody Heath in the 1954 film and by Marlyn Mason in the 1966 ABC television version, which restored My Mother's Wedding Day, Meg's comic song about her parents' drunken wedding, and kept much more of the stage score than the 1954 film did.
Pamela Britton created Meg on Broadway in 1947. On stage she is the village's most flirtatious resident and has two comic showcases: The Love of My Life, reflecting on her many romantic encounters, and My Mother's Wedding Day, sung as the villagers dance.
Who is Meg Brockie?
Meg is a lively, forward village girl in Brigadoon who sets her sights on Jeff Douglas, Tommy's cynical American friend, almost as soon as the two visitors arrive. She is unashamed about her romantic history and her interest in Jeff, providing much of the show's comic energy.
Her pursuit of Jeff gives the story a comic counterpoint to Tommy and Fiona's more earnest romance, and Meg's good humored persistence is part of what makes Brigadoon's world feel warm rather than merely quaint.
Meg Brockie's role in Brigadoon
Meg is a supporting comic role built around the storytelling number The Love of My Life, in which she recounts her past romances with unabashed relish. The part rewards a performer with strong comic timing and belting vocal ability.
Pamela Britton originated the role in 1947, and the part has remained a reliable showcase for comic actresses in Brigadoon revivals, offering some of the show's biggest laughs.
