Guenevere on stage vs screen

Broadway compared with the 1967 film

Julie Andrews originated Guenevere in 1960 and was on Warner Bros.' short list for the film, but she declined. Director Joshua Logan instead waited months for Vanessa Redgrave, whom he wanted after seeing her in Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966), and she was allowed to do her own singing even though she was not a traditional singer. Redgrave earned a Golden Globe nomination.

In the film, after Mordred catches her with Lancelot, she is sentenced to burn under Arthur's own new trial-by-jury laws until Lancelot rescues her, and in the final act she has taken refuge in a convent, from which she and Lancelot pay Arthur a farewell visit on the eve of battle. Phillipa Soo played Guenevere in the 2023 Broadway revival.

Who is Guenevere?

Guenevere arrives in Camelot as a young bride apprehensive about marrying a king she has never met, but she grows into a spirited, intelligent queen who genuinely comes to love Arthur. Her later attraction to the knight Lancelot du Lac is never played as simple betrayal, but as a real and anguished conflict between two loves and two loyalties.

Her affair, eventually exposed by Mordred, becomes the catalyst for the Round Table's collapse, and Guenevere's guilt and grief over the damage she and Lancelot cause gives the musical much of its emotional weight in the second act.

Guenevere's role in Camelot

Guenevere is the female lead and a demanding soprano role, opening the show with the playful The Simple Joys of Maidenhood and later carrying the aching duet If Ever I Would Leave You with Lancelot. The role requires an actress who can move convincingly from comic lightness to genuine tragedy.

Julie Andrews originated the role in 1960 fresh off her success in My Fair Lady, and the part has remained a major role for leading ladies, including Phillipa Soo in the 2023 Lincoln Center revival.
