Joe Gillis: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1950 film
William Holden played Joe in the 1950 film, which is famously narrated by Joe from beyond the grave after he is found dead in Norma's swimming pool. The musical keeps that framing. Kevin Anderson created the role in London in 1993 and Alan Campbell on Broadway in 1994, and Tom Francis played Joe in the 2023 London and 2024 Broadway revival.
On stage Joe gets songs to match his sardonic voice-over, above all the title song, Sunset Boulevard, plus The Perfect Year with Norma and the love duet Too Much in Love to Care with Betty Schaefer.

Who is Joe Gillis?
Joe is a down on his luck Hollywood screenwriter who, while hiding from men repossessing his car, stumbles into the isolated mansion of faded film star Norma Desmond. Drawn in by her offer of work and comfort, he becomes entangled in her delusions and her possessive affection, trading his independence for financial security.
Joe narrates the entire show in flashback, already dead by the time the story begins, giving his account a weary, self aware quality as he explains exactly how his compromises led to his own downfall.
Joe's role in Sunset Boulevard
Joe is a lead role in Sunset Boulevard, carrying the show's narration as well as its central romantic tension between Norma and the younger studio reader Betty Schaefer. The role requires a strong, versatile voice for both cynical, conversational narration and more emotionally open numbers as Joe's feelings become genuinely complicated.
The role was originated on Broadway by Alan Campbell. Audiences remember Joe as a flawed, self implicating narrator, a man whose sardonic commentary on his own bad choices gives the show much of its dark wit alongside Norma's operatic tragedy.
